A golf Handicap Index is a portable number that represents your potential scoring ability — the lower the number, the better you play. It lets golfers of different skill levels compete fairly by adjusting each player's expected score relative to the course and tees being played. Your index is calculated from the best score differentials in your most recent rounds using the official World Handicap System (WHS) formula, the same method used by golf associations and clubs around the world.
Without club membership or dedicated software, most golfers have no easy way to calculate this number themselves. MyGolfIndex fills that gap — post your scores as you play, and we handle the math automatically. No spreadsheets, no manual lookups, and no cost. See the full calculation breakdown →
1. Log Your Round
After each round, enter your course, tee box, and gross score. If a course or tee isn't in our database yet, you can add it in seconds and it becomes available to other golfers too.
2. We Calculate Your Index
Behind the scenes, MyGolfIndex applies the WHS formula — factoring in course rating, slope rating, and an Equitable Stroke Control adjustment — to turn your score into a differential, then combines your best recent differentials into your Handicap Index.
3. Track Your Progress
Every new round updates your index automatically. Use the Handicap Over Time chart to see your trend, or the Lower My Handicap tool to find out exactly what score you need on any course to bring your index down.
